After having practiced tax in several different states around the country, I can truly say that Pennsylvania is one of the worst states when it comes to taxes. Because PA is a commonwealth, rather than a state, the power to levy taxes is too widely disbursed. People from other states simply can’t believe it when they become exposed to what is going on. Pennsylvania is filled with nuisance taxes which come from various local jurisdictions, and the administrative and compliance burdens are counter-productive. The corporate tax rate is also the second highest in the country. Recently, the Pennsylvania Chamber of Commerce commissioned the tax foundation to provide some insight into how inefficient the Pennsylvania tax system is, and how to fix the problems. You can read the full report here, from the Tax Foundation.
